한국의 사이버 괴롭힘, 사이버 폭력?

한국 십대들이 스마트폰을 통해 항상 온라인에 머물면서, 메신저 등을 이용한 사이버 괴롭힘의 위험이 증가하고 있다고 서울시가 밝혔다.

South Korean teenagers’ embrace of the smartphone, allowing them to be online all the time, is increasing the risk of cyberbullying—harassment using Internet-based communications tools—the Seoul Metropolitan Government said.

 

한국인터넷중독상담센터를 통해 서울시 학생 4,998명을 대상으로 한 설문조사에 따르면 인터넷에 접속하는 주된 기기로 기존 컴퓨터(32.7%)보다 스마트폰(66.7%)을 사용하는 십대들이 2배 이상 많았다. 응답자 5명 중 1명은 스마트폰 중독 증세까지 보였다.

More than twice as many teens use smartphones as their main device for accessing the Internet as use standard computers—66.7% to 32.7%—according to a survey of 4,998 Seoul students conducted through a state-run counseling center for Internet addicts. One in five respondents showed signs of smartphone addiction.

 

응답자 중 3.7%만이 사이버 공간에서 친구를 괴롭혀 본 적이 있다고 답했지만, 스마트폰 중독 증세를 보이는 응답자들 사이에서는 이 수치가 14.7%까지 올라갔다. (사이버 괴롭힘을 당해 봤다고 응답한 비율은 전체 응답자 중 4%였다.) 괴롭힘에 사용한 도구를 묻자 가해자 중 59%가 카카오톡, 마이피플 등의 인스턴트 메시징 서비스를 이용했다고 답했으며, 16.9%는 페이스북, 트위터 등의 소셜네트워킹 서비스, 10.9%는 블로그, 9.8%는 문자메시지라고 답했다. (복수 선택 가능)

And while only 3.7% of the respondents said they’ve cyberbullied their peers (and 4% that they’ve been victims), that percentage jumped to 14.7% among respondents who showed the most serious signs of smartphone addiction. Asked what tools they used in bullying, 59% of the confessed bullies said instant-messaging services like Kakao Talk and MyPeople, 16.9% said social-networking services like Facebook and Twitter, 10.9% said blogs and 9.8% said text messages. Respondents were allowed to pick more than one.

 

가해 십대들에게 괴롭힘의 이유를 물었더니, 43.7%가 “우연히 가담했다”고 답했으며, 23.5%는 “누군가를 위협하기 위해” 괴롭혔다고 답했고, 18%는 “복수”하기 위해서, 12%는 지루해서 친구를 괴롭혔다고 말했다.

As to why the teens who confessed to bullying their peers had done so, 43.7% said they “got involved by chance,” 23.5% of them did it “to threaten someone,” 18% were seeking “revenge”—and 12% were bored.

 

서울시는 십대들이 최신 웹 기반 커뮤니케이션 도구들을 능숙하게 사용하지만 관련 윤리나 도덕 기준에 대한 이해는 부족한 것으로 나타났다고 밝혔다.

Teenagers are adept at using the latest Web-based communication tools, but they lack sufficient understanding of relevant ethics and moral standards, the government said.
